Fred Hammond is the founder of Goose & Co, who started dreaming up his big ideas whilst eating Goose for the first time almost 6 years ago. Ever since that first bite, he couldn’t believe that Goose was not more popular – an amazing meat and yet very few people had ever tried it!
During his years at Harper Adams University, Fred became convinced that launching Goose & Co was the way forward and has been hell-bent on telling the Goose story ever since.
One of his biggest beliefs is that young people are not encouraged into the business world enough. Even the most basic of business plans and visions can teach young people a wealth of knowledge about society, the way the world works and how their working lives can be best spent.
It is this strong passion for young people in business, which led to the inspiration for the Goose & Grow scholarship. This awards £10 from every Goose & Co purchase to a budding entrepreneur.
“I applied for the Goose & Grow scholarship with a business concept of turning waste game meat into a snack product.
Having received the runner-up prize from the Goose & Grow scholarship, I have been working with a marketing agency to develop my brand and explore marketing opportunities.
This process has helped me gain a better understanding of brand positioning and how it should be presented, in order to enter the higher end of the snacking market.
Receiving this scholarship prize and having support from Goose & Co also gave me the confidence to move forward with the idea, which at the time of application was only at concept stage. After a good amount of planning I am currently in the process of developing a food manufacturing space on the home farm and am in the process of securing the final funding necessary to purchase smoking and drying equipment.”
“Since receiving the Goose & Grow scholarship, I have begun to explore the processes involved with some elements of my exciting business plan.
These have included rearing and butchering my own flock of sheep, as part of a trial for both the uses of sustainable meat and sheep-skin rugs.
I’m really pleased with the outcome from both trials and am looking forward to continuing the benefits of receiving the scholarship to good use.”
